Products Description
Octenyl Succinic Anhydride (OSA, 2-octenylsuccinic anhydride) is an important amphiphilic organic anhydride intermediate. It has two commonly used CAS registry numbers in the global chemical market: 26680-54-6 and 42482-06-4.
These two CAS numbers represent the same chemical substance, molecular formula C₁₂H₁₈O₃. CAS 26680-54-6 is the mainstream and most widely adopted CAS number for bulk industrial and food-grade OSA worldwide. CAS 42482-06-4 is the CAS registration specifically for its cis-trans isomer mixture. The two numbers refer to the identical product with the same chemical structure, physical & chemical properties, as well as application performance.
OSA molecule contains a reactive anhydride functional group and a hydrophobic octenyl carbon chain. It can react with hydroxyl groups on starch molecules under mild conditions to produce octenyl succinic anhydride modified starch (OSA starch). This modified starch has excellent emulsification, encapsulation, and dispersion properties, and is widely used in food, paper-making, and surfactant industries.

Products Application
1. Food Industry: Produce food-grade OSA modified starch. It works as an emulsifier, encapsulating wall material and stabilizer. Widely used in beverages, powder flavor, essential oil microcapsules, bakery, sauces and fat powder. It can wrap oil-soluble ingredients, improve dispersion and prevent oil separation.
2. Paper Industry: Used as reactive sizing agent for paper and cardboard. It raises water resistance, surface strength and printing performance of paper.
3. Chemical Industry: Organic intermediate to synthesize surfactants, emulsifiers and other special derivatives.

FAQ
Q: Is OSA easy to hydrolyze?
A: Yes. It will hydrolyze when contacting water, so keep away from moisture during storage.
Q: What is the hazard classification of OSA?
A: It is corrosive and may cause burns to skin and eyes; avoid direct contact.
Q: Will OSA affect the taste and odor of the final modified starch product?
A: Qualified OSA with low impurity content will not bring a peculiar smell to modified starch and will not affect the flavor of food end products.
Q: Could OSA be mixed with water directly?
A: Not recommended. OSA will hydrolyze once contact with water and lose activity.
